Not all hydrogen peroxide grades are same. Industrial grade hydrogen peroxide is produced for industrial uses such as for pulp bleaching, waste water treatment and wood bleaching. Food grade hydrogen peroxide is devoted for food application such as for food packaging sterilization.
Food grade hydrogen peroxide is commonly prepared in 35% concentration. So, it is very common to call it as 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide.
35% food grade hydrogen peroxide is the common grade used for home uses such as anti microbial agent for the kitchen and household.
Industrial grade hydrogen peroxide is used as the raw material for producing 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide. Originally, industrial grade hydrogen peroxide still contains impurities such as heavy metal, iron (Fe) and stabilizers that are added during production process.
Stabilizers are usually added for improving hydrogen peroxide stability.
35% food grade hydrogen peroxide is produced by purifying the industrial grade in order to remove the above impurities. However, at the same time stabilizers are also removed from the hydrogen peroxide. This causes purified hydrogen peroxide has lower stability than industrial grade.
Finally, to improve its stability certain amount of stabilizer is added into food grade hydrogen peroxide solution before being packaged.
When we talk about standard specification of food grade hydrogen peroxide, then we will refer to US Food and Drug Association (FDA) and Japan Food Standard or European Standard.
Later in the other article, we will learn in more detail about all those standard specifications. We will see what kind of impurities mentioned in each standard and of course each allowable values.
Uses and Applications
Food grade hydrogen peroxide is used industrially as the sterilizing agent for food packaging or aseptic packaging. After that process, packaging is ready to use.
Besides, this grade can also be used as in many other applications in food industries such as in the production of whey, milk, starch, tea, cheese and nuts.
For home uses, there is a tendency that the usage of food grade hydrogen peroxide increases. Common applications include pool and hot tub maintenance, fresh food and vegetables washing, garden plants, fungi removal, aquarium clean up, stain removal, and so on.
Solvay, Evonik, FMC, US Peroxide and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical are some of famous world manufacturers of food grade hydrogen peroxide. They build plants in some countries to serve more customers.
All of their products have met standard of food grade hydrogen peroxide. So, you don’t have to hesitate to decide which products you will buy.
Type of Packaging
In industrial field, 35% food grade hydrogen peroxide are available in various types of packaging. It is available in polyethylene can (PE Can) 30 kg, Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) 1,000 kg and bulk container 18,000 kg.
Meanwhile, for home uses, it is available in polyethylene bottle in various size. You can choose size that is suitable with your needs.
